19/09/2010 - Aye Mateys! I need yer help
Ahoy readers!

In case you don't already know, today is Talk Like a Pirate Day (facebook.com), a nice day to make a post to ask for your help, me buckos (my friends, in pirate lingo)!

In the first days of September, when I had just 120 subscribers (according to FeedBurner) I set as a goal reach 200 subscribers by the end of the month. So far, you can see the counter in the top right marking 176 (as I am writing this). And I write this post to ask for your help! (and talk a little pirate, Arr!)

If you are a usual reader of this blog, you may already know I write about time management, programming, Linux and lately, about Iceland. And you all have friends (or at least, twitter followers!). Thus I ask you to
  • Pick one interesting post from this blog (more on that below)
  • Share it with someone you know will like it
  • (Optionally) Recommend mostlymaths.net Facebook page to your friends
I suggest you the following pages, as the most read and (maybe) interesting pages in this blog. They cover all topics I talk about. If you have your favourite page from this blog and it is not one of these below, please drop me a comment.
Thanks! Share this post, too it may help spreading a little subscriber love. Your presence here is what encourages the growing of this blog, and will hopefully make us pass the 200 mateys mark.

03/08/2010 - Best posts I have read in June and July 2010
Here is my selection of posts from my blog roll, since 1 June until 31 July. By posting it here I hope some more people find them useful, also to clean my Favorites folder in my RSS reader. I hope you like them as much as I did.

Become a Book Review Ninja: 10 Steps to Mastery (by Scott Dinsmore), A Secret Black Belt Technique for Writing Knock-out Posts (by Doug Armey) and How to Win Friends and Influence Readers (by Katie Tello), all posted in Write to Done. All interesting reads about writing, and self-explaining titles.

The More You Procrastinate, the Better You Get and A Trip to Outloggistan by The Friendly Anarchist. As usual, Fabian digs into my brain and finds ideas I had stacked for new posts, and writes them far better than usual. I should wear a tin-foil hat more often!

Curious? Factor to the Rescue! and Rolling Dice in Re: Factor. A blog about the Factor programming language, written as a learning tool. These two posts are very interesting from a fun programming point of view.

Be Persistent in Schauderhaft: Just a few tips tingling to my view of constant improvement.

Happy Numbers in Thoughts on Corewars: An amusing recreational mathematics problem solved in RedCode. Which is highly non trivial.

How to Get Things Done When You're Feeling Overwhelmed and 8 Habits of Highly Excellent Bloggers (guest post by Celestine Chua) in ProBlogger Blog Tips. These have long enough headlines to show you what they are about. Interesting reads as usual in ProBlogger.

How Much Do You Value Your Time in FreestyleMind. An interesting point of view from Oscar Del Ben's productivity blog.

Maximising Your Impact as a Researcher, a guest post by Alain Désilets, in Daniel Lemire's blog. As a researcher, I found this as a very interesting read.

Perfect Pineapple Pizza at Preston Bannister's { random memes }: In a blog usually about programming and computing, a recipe stands out. And although I don't like pineapple pizza, this looks interesting.

How to be Insanely Productive and Still Keep Smiling and The Best Goal is no Goal, by ZenHabits. Two interesting posts, the first by Mary Jaksch and the second by Leo Babauta.

Writing Your Scroll: How to Live on Your Terms, in PluginID. An interesting read, based on the book The Greatest Salesman in the World (Amazon affiliate link).

Eight Ways to Make Good Use of Your Spare Minutes Online (by Ali Hale), Manage Your Life One Domain at a Time (by Joe Wilner) and 6 Simple Ways to Eliminate Your Excuses (by Henri Junttila), all posted in Dumb Little Man. These were pretty interesting reads with tips to improve your time use.

Also, in June I discovered Max Klein's blog, and I will add the posts that urged me to add his blog to my blog roll. How to Avoid Being a One Hit Wonder is another lesson in how fundamentals are... fundamental, as I have written before. My Co-Founder Took My Company And My Girlfriend is an enlightening story in software development, and life in general. Drug Dealers Shouldn't Make iPhone Apps teaches us to keep to what we know how to do.

22/05/2010 - The Prolific Blogger Award

Mostlymaths was awarded the Prolific Blogger Award by John@Make Nothing Online (thanks John!).

The award was originally created by Hazra of Advance Bookings. The award recognises those prolific bloggers who blog tirelessly and have made the blogging community such a vibrant place.

Here are the written rules (although I would change has to may in Rule 1... don't like being forced to do anything):
  1. Every winner of the Prolific Blogger Award has to pass on this award to at least seven other deserving prolific bloggers. Spread some love!
  2. Each Prolific Blogger must link to the blog from which he/she has received the award.
  3. Every Prolific Blogger must link back to this post, which explains the origins and motivation for the award.
  4. Every Prolific Blogger must visit this post and add his/her name in the Mr. Linky, so that we all can get to know the other winners.
And now, my nominations:
  • Freestylemind.com: Oscar del Ben's blog usually tops what I share with people I know or bookmark in my RSS reader.
  • Hackerboss.com: Programming and leading tips from a twitter follower which turned into an inhabitant of my RSS reader.
  • Schauderhaft: Uncategorized thoughts (mostly programming or project related). Always interesting content.
  • The Friendly Anarchist: Discovered this blog through Oscar's. Very good content ahead!
  • Tricks and ticks: A fellow Ben NanoNote user's blog with a lot of Linux and NanoNote tips.
  • Shanidar.net: A blog about cooking and reading, in Catalan. Google translate can come handy.
  • Rants and apps: Tuomas Pelkonen's blog. He hasn't published since April, 2010 and I miss what he used to write. If you read this, please write something more!

31/12/2009 - 2009 Sum up, 2010 breakdown
From FlickrFrom tomorrow on, I will stop writing on every prime day of the month, and switch to write whenever I want to. I started the "prime days" thing to force me to write on a regular basis, but as of late, I think the quality of some posts (which I planned to write really well) was not up to what I wanted. I hope this means better posts, you will judge. Most read posts this year, with the

13/12/2009 - GoogleWave
From Flickr A month or so ago, I finally got a GoogleWave account invitation. And two weeks later I got hold of my own invitations, so I could get someone to talk to. But I don't get the point of GoogleWave. It is slow and quirky, and, well, can't see yet the utility. Although I guess it should be useful to play online Diplomacy.
